The Jazz RoomNo. 9 of the Continental 100
Kind of Blue
Miles Davis · 1959
The one everybody owns, and the one everybody is right to own.
Why it matters
Recorded in two sessions from sketches the band saw on the day. Its reputation has made it slightly invisible — put it on properly, without conversation, and the sheer strangeness of it returns. Nothing on it is in a hurry, and nothing on it is decoration.
The Continental setting
Late evening, the good glass, the lamp on, the telephone somewhere else in the house.
