The Jazz Room

Sunday at the Village Vanguard

Bill Evans Trio · 1961

Three men listening to each other more carefully than most people listen to anything.

Why it matters

Recorded on a Sunday afternoon in a basement on Seventh Avenue, ten days before the bassist Scott LaFaro was killed. You can hear the glasses. You can hear the conversation at the bar. What you mostly hear is a trio inventing a way of playing together that nobody had quite managed before — democratic, weightless, unhurried.

The Continental setting

Sunday, the papers spread across the table, no reason to dress before one o'clock.
