The Best of Bond… James Bond

John Barry · 1962

Brass, strings and tailoring: the house style of the well-dressed thriller.

Why it matters

Barry gave Bond his actual character — not the gadgets, the orchestra. Those descending strings and that flattened brass told audiences the man was dangerous, well-cut and slightly bored, long before the actor opened his mouth. Nobody has improved on it since.

The Continental setting

Tying a black tie, unhurried, with somewhere rather good to be at nine.
