Why it matters
Baker sang the way other men whisper — no vibrato, no theatre, no attempt to impress anyone in the room. It should not work. It works completely. The trumpet answers the voice like a second, more sceptical opinion, and the whole record moves at the pace of a man who has already decided he is not going anywhere tonight.
